Still, the fall
English translation of the poem Totusi, toamna
Written by: Adrian Paunescu
Translated by: Golan
And, still, fall is coming,
And, still, fall is coming,
And you can feel it, and you are humming.
And, still, fall is coming,
And, still, fall is coming,
And, alas, we have grown old.
It is still green, the grass on the hills,
And the days have not yet been cut short,
And someone's coming, carrying a bag,
From up the mountains, as if from a plot.
The cobs of corn are still bearing milk teeth,
The bees are growing heavy in their flight,
The rain is showering down every night,
And the crickets keep chirping till they die.
The thick coats haven't been brought down from our attics,
The love hasn't been brought down from our dreams,
Quinces are ripening in numerous ways,
But biting them is still prohibited.
In the haystacks, it smells like fiery flowers,
The female deers are not searching for their males,
Amongst the sour grapes, the cellarman is dying,
Until the wedding, we still have enough time.
